The History of Fulton County Cotton Mill

The Fulton County Cotton Mill was a historic mill complex in Atlanta, Georgia, that operated from 1881 to 1977. It was built by Jacob Elsas, a German Jewish immigrant who founded the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill Company. The mill produced cotton bags and other textile products for various industries. The mill also had a village with housing for its workers, many of whom were poor whites and blacks from rural areas. The mill was one of the largest employers in Atlanta and a significant part of its industrial and social history. The mill was involved in several labor disputes, including a strike in 1914 that led to violence and national attention. The mill closed in 1977 due to competition from foreign markets and changing consumer demands. The site was redeveloped into a mixed-use residential and commercial area called The Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts and The Stacks.
